Gossamer Down

Note: I offered to host some old Pernese filks and original songs for Thamon's player shortly after I transferred in to Igen; this is the first, set to the tune of John Denver's "Calypso."

Gossamer Down

Sailors, we know of the dangers in beauty,
Red dawnings are warnings, not scenes to delight.
Rejoice in safe harbor but ready the rigging--
We leave on the tide with the gleam of first light.

(Chorus)
Oh, fly away Gossamer! light as the winds blow,
Bring me back word of my love who has gone.
Fly away Gossamer, dance on the tide's flow,
Bring me an answer from one gone so long.

The call and the lure of the ocean's vast waters,
The sweet, thrumming song of the wind in the lines,
The boom of the canvas, the roar of the breakers,
The thrill of the storm that may well end your life.

These things fill our lives, both the joys and the dangers.
As any can tell you, no voyage is sure--
And once in awhile there's a brutal reminder,
Like Gossamer's final and fatal venture.

 (Chorus)

Gossamer sailed from South Boll down to Southern--
No swifter deep-water craft's ever been sailed.
Her captain was vet'ran of many a tempest,
Her crew were skilled sailors--all twenty and eight.

Two days out from Ista there's nothing to save you
When storms rip the curtain that holds back the sky.
Rain-drenched and wind-lashed the Gossamer foundered--
As waves in wild fury crashed over the side.

(Chorus)

Who can say now what became of that schooner?
No trace could be found of her captain or crew.
Of the vessel herself they found only a skiff
Floating alone in the wide open blue.

Twenty-nine families shared the same sorrow:
Losing their loved ones to a ravening storm.
But lives of all sailors are always uncertain--
Irregardless, we sail with the tide in the morn.
