Kassi's Note: A short, fun log in which Kassi and Lysseth fly
together for the first time. It begins a bit abruptly; I believe the
log starts after T'fian asks Kassi whether she and Lyss are ready to
fly, and invites Meli to watch and help out since she and Juliath had
already done their first glides. (I was a bit late in getting started,
due to having been offline for the weekend.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Log:

T'fian laughs in response to Meli as Kassima buckle's Lysseth's straps.
"No. I'm serious. Feel free to add anything you want since you've already
done this."

Kassima gives Lyss a last check and nods. "I think everything's ready,
sir." She glances at Meli with a grin.

T'fian smiles. "Okay. Let's head out to the bowl."

T'fian moves through the opening to the west, heading toward the bowl.

Juliath moves through the opening to the west, heading toward the bowl.

Meli moves through the opening to the west, heading toward the bowl.

Lysseth moves through the opening to the west, heading toward the bowl.

You move through the opening to the west, heading into the bowl.

T'fian nods to Jaen. "'Evening." He smiles as the weyrlings follow behind
him.

Meli salutes and stands near Juliath quietly.

Kassima salutes Jaen, Notreth, and Meroth cheerfully.

Jaen nods from next to Notreth. "T'fian," she nods, watching the weyrlings
and returning their salutes.

Meroth warbles with amusement as he watches the young dragons.

T'fian turns to Kassima. "Okay. We're going to cover flying now, but first
and most importantly we're going to talk about flight related injuries.
Listen very carefully because safety issues are more important than
anything else. Got it?"

Kassima nods. "Aye, sir, I understand that."

Notreth rumbles softly and Jaen nods. "Yes, we'll get out of the way of
their lesson."

T'fian nods to Kassima. "Good." He looks at Jaen. "No, you really don't
have to go anywhere."

Dragon> Juliath bespoke Lysseth with << You will *enjoyment* this... It is
*warmth happiness home*. >>

Jaen hrms. "Well, Notreth'll stay, and I'll be back soon, then." She smiles
reassuringly at the weyrlings nearest to her and turns towards the north
bowl.

Jaen walks north.

Lysseth> Juliath senses that Lysseth rumbles happily. << I cannot wait to
fly. My lifemate says it will be the most exciting thing in the world. >>

T'fian watches after Jaen for a moment and then turns to Kassima. "I know
this has been said many times, but young dragons for various reasons get
muscles strains very easily. Before and after any strenuous excercise, you
should always check your dragon over any soreness. And during any
excercises, should the dragon complain, you must stop immediately and
immediately inform a weyrlingmaster and Selenay. A serious strain can keep
a dragon grounded for several months."

Kassima nods somberly, listening with full attentiveness.

Meli nods, listening carefully. "An' be careful too... the dragons may want
t'do more than they should, an' -we- have t'keep them from overdoin' it."

T'fian nods to Meli, smiling. "Yes. You must make sure that your dragon, in
her eagerness doesn't overstrain herself."

Kassima glances over to Meli and nods to her, too. "Aye, I've been through
that, when Lyss wanted to go to Boll...." She sighs and grins ruefully.

T'fian continues. "Additionally cold weather and /between/ can seriously
aggravate a muscle strain. So the best thing to do after any strenuous
excercises is to go take your dragon to the hot springs."

Notreth rumbles low and approvingly in his throat.

Kassima smiles slightly. "Aye, sir. Lyss drags me there exercises or no,
but it's good to know that it's good for her."

T'fian grins. "Okay. Good. Now could you have your dragon unfurl her wings
as if she's going through the excercise routines?"

Kassima grins and glances to Lysseth, who rumbles and extends her wings
obediantly.

T'fian nods approvingly at the green and walks over to her. "Okay, check
now for any soreness and muscle discontinuity." He runs his hand along her
hide underneath her wing.

Kassima nods and carefully runs her hands over Lysseth's wing muscles,
silently asking her dragon questions. She shakes her head. "Lyss says
there's nothing wrong, sir, and I don't feel anything either."

T'fian nods. "That's good." He quickly inspects Lysseth's wing, looking for
any tears in the membrane. Having passed his inspection, he moves on to the
riding straps. "Okay. I know this has been said before as well, but there
are things you're going to hear a lot of. I know that you're straps have
been inspected, but it is important to place them properly on Lysseth, to
make sure they don't chafe or that there's not enough pressure in one
spot." He looks over the riding straps carefully. "She's not complaining
about the straps at all?"

Benden Weyr> Selenay offers T'fian the Selenay award for the night. Boy,
that bowl spam!

Benden Weyr> T'fian grins. "Did I tell you to +watch the south bowl,
hmmm? ;)"

Kassima frowns slightly. "She says they're mostly fine, but a little
uncomfortable right about here--" Kassima finds the spot in the straps and
readjusts them. "There, that's better. They're fine now, she tells me."

T'fian smiles. "Good. Good," he says. "Well, now that's all done with, do
you have any questions about what's been said?"

Kassima considers. "One, sir--about how long should she stay in the hot
springs after exercise?"

T'fian grins. "Until she's happy," he laughs. "Actually the hot springs
can't hurt her, so it doesn't really matter."

Kassima nods, smiling. "I'm glad of that, sir, since she does enjoy her
soaks in the springs. I guess I don't have any more questions."

T'fian grins. "Dragons like the hot springs. I'm sure you know when it's
time for you to get out, so go by that. Now that that's done. It's on to
flying..."

T'fian says "OOC: We're not actually leaving this room for now. Just wanted
you to be clear on that. ;)"

Kassima OOCly nodnods. I saw Ursa practicing earlier, so I kind of
figured. :)

Meli moves about checking Juliath's straps again, murmuring softly to
herself as she does so, watching Kassi thoughtfully.

Kassima can't help an excited grin at those words, and Lysseth warbles
slightly, looking equally eager.

T'fian continues with a smile. "First I'm going to have Meroth demonstrate
to you what we're doing. I'm going to stay here, and we're going to be
waypoints. You and Lysseth are going to fly to Meroth, land, and then fly
back to me. You're going to do the circuit twice. Now, two things to make
sure of. The first is that when Meroth demonstrates, you are not to go
higher than he flies. We're going to be at less than a quarter
dragonlengths so as to not hit the bowl's crosscurrents. I don't want you
accidentally thrown against a wall. Secondly, when you launch, I want you
to check all around you before Lysseth unfurls her wings. Many a hapless
person has been knocked over by a dragon unfurling his wings with knowing
what was around him. Now, this is just going to be a short glide. Got it?"

Benden Weyr> T'fian says, "More bowl spam for Selenay. :)"

Kassima listens to all of that, assimilating it, and then nods. "Aye, sir,
I think so."

T'fian nods. "Okay. Wait for my signal." He turns to Meroth for a moment.

Meroth warbles and unfurls his wings, leaning down on his back legs. On an
easy downstroke of his wings he pushes himself into the air, and glides
down the length of the bowl before folding his wings in next to his body
and touching down lightly on all four legs.

T'fian looks after Meroth and then back at Kassima. "You saw what Meroth
did? Okay, mount up."

Kassima watches carefully as Meroth demonstrates, then nods to T'fian.

You place one hand on Lysseth's neck and she warbles down at you fondly.
You grin and scratch her eyeridges once before climbing up onto her lower
neckridges, using the riding straps and Lysseth's thoughtfully offered
foreleg.

Dragon> Lysseth senses that Meroth warbles. << Now it is your turn, Little
One. Just do what I did and glide to me. It's easy and you will have fun
doing it. >>

Kassima glances around, checking to make sure the area around Lysseth's
wings is clear.

<*> T'fian crosses his arms across his chest and watches Kassima and
Lysseth.

<*> Meli grins. "Make sure you check -up- too, Kassi."

<*> T'fian grins at Meli and nods. "Good point."

Kassima gives Lysseth the go-ahead, and the young green leans back on her
hindquarters before leaping into the air with less grace than Meroth, but
enough to get the job done. She gives one beat of her wings and then glides
smoothly, to land, not quite steadily, by Meroth.

<*> Meroth warbles proudly at Lysseth.

Dragon> Lysseth senses that Meroth warbles proudly. << You did very good.
See, is it not fun, Pretty? >>

Lysseth> Meroth and Juliath sense that Lysseth warbles with excitement.
<< That was fun! But I didn't get the landing right. >>

Kassima gives Lysseth a proud pat on the neck, grinning broadly. "That was
all right?" she calls to the others.

<*> T'fian calls out. "That was excellent, Kassima! Now do it again and
come back towards me!"

Dragon> Meroth bespoke Lysseth and Juliath with << You did very well,
Lysseth. The big brown Spineth had much more trouble with landing than you
did. >>

Dragon> Juliath bespoke Lysseth with << You will improve. >>

Kassima doesn't need to give Lysseth any encouragement; her lifemate
spreads her wings and springs up from the ground with a little more success
than last time, gliding back to T'fian quickly and landing as best she can.
Which isn't all that well, but isn't any worse than before.

<*> Meli smiles. "Ok if we try again?" patting Juliath's side.

<*> T'fian nods. "Good, Kassima. A word of advise, though..." he nods to
Meli. "Sure, go ahead."

<*> Meli climbs smoothly up Juliath's extended foreleg and settles herself
between the neck ridges, as the green gives a welcome rumble from deep in
her throat.

<*> Aphrael comes out of the weyrling barracks.

<*> Prefeth comes out of the weyrling barracks.

<*> Aphrael salutes T'fian as she peers around.

Kassima glances over to Meli with a grin and waves cheerfully to Aph, then
nods and listens closely to T'fian.

<*> T'fian turns back to Kassima. "A trick that I've learned is that you
can come in very slow and low to the ground, then have your dragon pull in
his wings. It'll stop all forward momentum and cause the dragon to drop
straight down. At high speeads or altitudes, it won't work very well, but
slow and low it work's like a charm." He returns Aphrael's salute.

<*> T'fian adds. "In fact, at high speeds or altitudes, that is risking
serious injury."

Kassima considers this. "All right, sir, Lyss'll give it a try... maybe
it'll smooth out the landings a bit." She pauses at that last bit. "Because
the dragon would lose control of their descent?" she asks, curious.

<*> Prefeth warbles a soft greeting, watching with slowly spinning eyes.
Aphrael sits down on his foreleg, listening carefully.

Dragon> Meroth bespoke Prefeth, Lysseth, and Juliath with << You want to
try it again, Juliath? >>

Dragon> Juliath bespoke Meroth, Prefeth, and Lysseth with << Yes!! I am
getting better at it! >>

<*> Astride Juliath, Meli chuckles as Juliath prepares for her glide. She
checks around the green, including above, as Juliath opens her wings and
tenses her leg muscles.

<*> T'fian watches the Meli and her green, smiling lightly.

<*> Juliath pushes off smoothly, rising into the air with one beat of her
wings, gliding towards Meroth. She backwings slightly as the pair arrives,
landing much more smoothly than the first few times, with little noise.

Dragon> Prefeth, Lysseth, and Juliath sense that Meroth warbles. << That
was really good, Juliath. >>

Dragon> Meroth, Prefeth, and Lysseth sense that Juliath rumble trumpets
<< I am *happiness* whenever we fly together! >>

<*> Astride Juliath, Meli grins as Juliath turns around to face back
towards the south end of the bowl. She thumps on Jul's neck happily as they
prepare to return.

<*> T'fian turns to Kassima and smiles. "You'll get it soon enough." He
calls out to Meli. "Come back! I want to see that again and give Kassi
another chance."

Lysseth> Meroth, Prefeth, and Juliath sense that Lysseth warbles to
Juliath. << It is much fun! As much fun as my lifemate promised it would
be. >>

<*> Juliath launches up again, a little higher this time but not too high,
glides, and once again prepares to backwing and land. She slightly
miscalculates, however, and ends up landing with a soft *thump* this time,
though it's still relatively smooth, and square on at least.

<*> T'fian laughs. "Good job, Meli, Juliath." He turns to Kassima. "Okay.
It's your turn again. Try to follow Juliath's example."

Kassima nods, grinning, and checks the area around and above Lysseth over
again as Lyss tenses her leg muscles to spring.

<*> Lysseth leaps into the air, her takeoff much improved from the first
few times, and gives one shallow wingbeat before settling into her glide.
She pulls her wings in at the end and drops down to the ground, landing
near Meroth with a thump that is still better than her previous landings.

Dragon> Meroth bespoke Lysseth with << My rider is an idiot. For times like
this it is better to turn your wing backward and cut the air, dropping your
speed. The humans call it backwinging. It slows you and pushes you
downward. >>

Lysseth> I bespoke Meroth with << Like Juliath did? All right, I shall try
that next time. >>

<*> T'fian rolls his eyes at the something and calls out. "Better! That was
definitely better! You'll have this in no time. Okay, come back now."

Kassima looks over her shoulder and calls back, "Shall we make the trip
back now, sir?"

<*> Notreth lumbers north.

<*> Meli slips smoothly down from Juliath's neck to her foreleg and to the
ground, giving her a gentle caress.

<*> Lysseth unfurls her wings and jumps nimbly into the air, spreading her
wings and gliding swiftly back the way she came. At the end of her glide
she tries to mimic Juliath's backwinging technique--without total success,
since she still lands off-balance, but without the thump she experienced at
her last landing.

<*> Aphrael throws her arms about Prefeth, and there they remain for a
moment, rider and dragon, attuned to each other. Aphrael slowly releases
her hold on the blue dragon with obvious reluctance and climbs up onto
Prefeth's neckridges.

<*> Astride Prefeth, Aphrael salutes once again, calling out, "Good
flying!" As Prefeth lumbers off to the hot springs.

<*> Prefeth lumbers in the direction of the shimmering lake, leaving the
South Bowl area of the Weyr.

<*> T'fian smiles. "Each time you do it, you improve. Landing's always the
hardest. You'll have it all down in no time. Okay, I think that's enough
for today, if you want. I know that I'm hungry and want to head to the LC.
You can continue practicing under R'ten's eyes here" -- he motions to
another assistant weyrlingmaster. "Remember you're going to be doing this
every day. Just add it to all the excercises," he grins.

<*> Meli nods as she checks the muscles along Juliath's wings, and then the
sails.

<*> T'fian says "OOC note: You can practice if there's a rider around or
not... to quote: 'ie someone whose dragon can save the day if they falter
at all. ;)'"

Kassima grins broadly. "Think I'll give Lyss a bit of a soaking in the
springs, sir--she's earned it." She gives her lifemate an affectionate slap
on the shoulder.

<*> T'fian nods and chuckles. "Yes, she had. Make sure that she's not sore
first, please, though."

You slide off of Lysseth's neck to land beside her easily. She rumbles,
cocking her head down at you, and you rub her eyeridges gratefully.

Kassima nods. "Aye, sir, 'twouldn't be good not to give her the once-over
first, nor fair to her." She turns to Lysseth, running a hand over the
young dragon's wing muscles.

T'fian nods. "No, it wouldn't. Well, I will leave you now. You did really
well, and soon you'll have problems with any of this at all."

Juliath refurls her wings as Meli finishes and gives a happy rumble.

T'fian salutes Kassima and Meli. "Clear skies."

T'fian walks off towards the Weyrling Barracks.

Meli unfastens Juliath's riding straps, gradually removing them as she
checks for any signs of wear on the straps or any chafe marks on Juliath's
hide.

Kassima gives Lysseth a pat and she refurls her wings, bringing her head
down to whuffle Kassi. The girl grins at her lifemate and starts unbuckling
the straps, watching Meli and checking Lysseth similarly.

Meli walks off towards the Weyrling Barracks.

Juliath waddles through the entrance into the Weyrling Barracks.

You walk through the huge entrance into the Weyrling Barracks.
